Surveillance

March 19, 2010

In this scene the lighting in the character is totally different than the lighting that is directed to the window. In the character the lighting is a yellowish hue and in the window the light is completely white.

An interesting aspect is that al the light is in the right side of the screen (stage left)  and on the opposite side is almost in the dark.

The quality of light is medium intensity and the direction of the light comes from down right of the screen this means that the director/light designer tried to evoke in the viewer a message in the character, usually related with evil.

The shot is composed by many lines in the background, parallels and horizontals. In one hand there is a character lit by a warm and “human” color and on the other hand there is a inert background lit by a cold white light.

Seven swords

March 19, 2010

This shot is interesting due to many visual elements. First, the light is naturalistic and it is only lit by the sun. The direction of this light is placed opposite as were the camera is placed and also is behind the characters and this creates the silhouettes on the horseman and the silhouette of the ground.

The sun creates big colors pallet that goes from the red palette range to the dark and this color gradient goes through the ground to the sky. This type of shot can be related to a romantic or heroic characters.

Sparrow

March 19, 2010

This shot is set as a symbolic lighting style. The composition also is set using the thirds of the screen. In one hand there is a character standing and on the opposite side of the scream there is a light source directed to a mail box. The message is more than obvious also not only because of this two light sources very well-defined but also because in the midground there is a dark area, therefore the spectator eye goes directly from the mail box to the character.

Sin city

March 19, 2010

This type of lighting is completely and pure expressionist. The light is showing to the audience the inner feeling of the character that it is driving. The light also is set such a cartoon can be lit and this is evident if the background is analyzed. For example, over the round window there is a texture in the car wall that emulates the cartoon paper.

The lighting is composed mainly by a white light and a blue light but in minor percentage.

The light is completely un naturalistic which is difficult to analyze this type of image because there is not a very well-defined where there is lighting and where is pos production.

Sin city

March 19, 2010

This type of lighting is complete un naturalistic and is set as expressionist. In one hand there is three source lights that illuminates all the scene which is not even close to reality. The main source light is in the lamp-post and is the one that provide illumination to the entire scene.

The environment is set as a dark night but there are many parts of the house that are supposed to be in dark but they are lit. One example of this is in the left side of the house (stage right) where there is a part of the house that it is lit and another is completely in the dark. There is a high contrast between lit and dark areas.

Serenity

March 19, 2010

The main concept from this scene is the result of a slaughter and the responsible appears to be the girl that I is standing with an axe on one hand and a sword on the other hand.

The scene is lit by sources directed to specific areas. The foreground is lit letting the audience to see a lot of people dead, the same happens on the left (stage right) where there is a medium intensity light directed to a death person. The midground is where the assassin lies and she is lit on her shoulders and in the front of her head and finally the background is lit by a high intensity light and a gobo of a window.

The midground and the foreground “work” together in terms that the background light separates the character from the background.

The shinning

March 19, 2010

In this scene the composition is interesting in terms of cinematography. There is symmetry in terms of repetition of objects and also there is an interesting uniformity of colors in the set (red and white and on the floor as well). The light in this scene is mostly even and the characters are lit naturalistically. One interesting aspect is that there are almost no shadows on the scene, which means that the light is uniform.

In this scene the director put more emphasis on the scene than to the actors, the stage is much more interesting than the characters

The shinning

All the elements in this composition enhance the felling of cold and loneliness. The environment does not have a huge contrast in light and dark areas and this is due that the snow is a great source for bounce light.

Also the characters are the foreground of the scene, they are not well lit and they are almost seeing by their respective silhouette.  The scene is lit by a low intensity light directed to the characters and many others small size but high intensity sources. The midground is established as the lights on the left (stage right) and the background are the two lights on the right (stage left).

The light sources share the same color which is white but the environment produces a bluish hue, therefore the scene is blue.

Seven words

March 19, 2010

In this shot an interesting aspect in lighting and composition terms is the colors used by the director/scene designer. In one hand there is a bright and powerful fire that produce a yellow color. On the other hand their environment is lit by a blue/purple. These  two color are almost antagonist on this scene, one represents life and the other represents the nothing.

The characters are lit by the fire, which is not quite verisimilar because they are far away, also the contrast in the background is not very high therefore I believe that this is a shot composite digitally.

On the right side (stage left) there is a beam of light interring that do not has a powerful meaning but only distracts the attention, of course, this is only by analyzing a frame of an entire scene, is this case the context can explain that distraction. There is a foreground, a midground and a background. The foreground is the fire and people sleeping in the floor , the midground is a house and a group of people and the background are the mountains.

Serenity

March 19, 2010

This is a shot from the movie “Serenity”, in this particular shot all the characters faces are similar evenly lit except for the character that it is in the back of the stage. The source light is in front of the characters and on the top but also the light enters through the windows in the set.

The quality of the light is medium in intensity and the color is white. The distribution of the light on the surface does not generate a lot of rebound due to the material quality,

In terms of composition there are three characters that appears to be most important over the rest, these three are standing or in a position above the rest and also are located in the thirds of the screen, absorbing the viewer attention.
