The dark knight

January 30, 2010

The type of lighting is set as strict motivational because is emulating the sun light. There are many beams of lights and the quality of them is hard, the edge is well defined in all the light spots except where the character is located. In this particular spot the quality of light is very similar to the others but the edge is definitely softer than the others. This gives induces me to think that this light is it is artificial, and it is created by a Fresnel light.
Finally, all the shadows go to the same direction, which means that that is the only source that lit the character.

Fear and loathing in vegas

January 30, 2010

This a clearly a motivational light type. In one hand, there is a character in the foreground lit by a red pure light. Also the character has a peculiar expression on his face, like if he is horrified by something or someone. On the other hand, there is a blueish background, lit in a strict motivational lighting. Also in the background there is a character that it is in a casual posture totally the opposite to the character in the foreground.
The red intense light in the foreground helps to express the inner thoughts of the character. Is like the character is “on fire”, uncomfortable or in an intense or deep thoughts. The light is set to follow this performance, not reality, it is set as non motivational light. Finally, if this foreground reality contrast with the “real world” background, have much more sense.

Max manus

January 30, 2010

This is a scene from the movie max manus. Personally, I believe that this scene in lighting terms is about planes and values. In the front plane there is a character with his face well-lit but not the rest of his body, only his face is medium lit but  comparing it with other object or characters in the enviroment it is almost “shining”. A secondary character is placed in the mid ground and  his face it is lit very softly but has a good glow on his should which separates him from the background.
Finally there is background on the right (left in stage lighting) which is very well-lit, not only the character but also the enviroment. This is where the eye of the spectator should be.

The matrix

January 30, 2010

Scene from the movie “The matrix”. A nicely composite scene. I picked this scene specially because the filter that
the water produces to the light when finally reach the ground surface.
The quality of light that goes thru a denser medium it is afected by the time it emerges from that surface, in this case, water. In this scene generates an interesting red light, in the ground, some different greens and i lights and a high intensity white light that it is like the mid ground. Also it is nice how all these different elements interact between each other. This scene has a great variety of lights in terms of intensity and color and finally, the red light in the ground could be prepared to lead the eye of the spectator to the silhouette of the character standing.

Full Metal Jacket

January 30, 2010

This is a scene from the movie “Full metal jacket”.  At first sight, appears to be  simple scene in lighting terms but I believe that it is not. I think it is a very well done lighting scene.

In one hand there is a blue ambient light that it is entering thru the window and creates those interesting shapes in the wall in the back, wich give to the spectator depth and creates an interesting and nice framing. Also, in the scene the character  in the foreground it is lit by a flashlight, but it is interesting how contrast this light with the enviroment.
Also, apparently that the scene could be lit by the rebound of the light entering thru the window, or that it is what the director want us (as viewers) to believe but in my opinion there has to be another light very soft because I think there is not enough intensity in the window light for lit all the set so evenly.
