The Warlords

March 12, 2010

This shoot is very interesting because many aspects such as, lighting, symmetry, distribution and silhouettes. The lighting in this scene appears to be generated by the fireworks creating interesting “smoke drawings” or figures in the sky, which takes almost the half of the screen in the composition. Also how the smoke interact whit the fireworks is very interesting. Another aspect is the symmetry. The shot is very symmetric from left to right or vice versa, not from top to bottom or vice versa. The symmetry is broken by the irregularity of the fireworks in the sky. Also the silhouettes of the elements that are present in the scene are interesting and finally, the distribution of the light in the side surface (*difficult to tell if its water or not) generates a beautiful color gradient.

Eyes Wide Shut

March 12, 2010

The movie is titled “Eyes wide shut”. In this particular scene there are many interesting elements. First, the ornaments in the scene provide to the viewer a specific period of time, Christmas. Second there are many source lights in the scene, but globally can be analyzed in terms of foreground, mid ground and background. In the foreground the two characters are supposed to be lit mainly by a source light placed on the table. The intensity of this light is medium and the position of the light that determines the distribution of the light in the character that it is in front of the camera is meant to express evilness.

The mid ground is composed by the Christmas lights which are small spotlights with different colors but there is no uniformity in lighting terms in the mid ground which provoke to the spectator eye go to the background which is very strong in terms of intensity, color and also because of the composition because the christmas tree, the character and the sign are placed on the thirds of the screen. This image is a gradient from the foreground to the background in terms of light.

Elite quad

March 12, 2010

In this particular scene the light is green/blue. The important element in this scene is not the character that it is sleeping but the empty spot in the bed. The light is directed to that specific part of the bed, therefore the message of the light designer/director is that someone is missing in that place and also the performance of the character “hugging”  or trying to get in contact with someone that it is not there enhance this message.

The lighting is mid in intensity terms and the edge is not well defined, which creates a nice gradient from light to darkness in the actress  face, for example. The distribution of light is interesting because the fabric in the bed generates a interesting rebound of light.

Elite quad

March 12, 2010

In this shoot there are four defined color light sources. The scene is mainly lit by a red light, very powerful, almost a pure red. The second color is a yellow, there is a white light in the mid ground and there is a blue light in the foreground.

This lighting style is expressionist because of the high intensity emotional colors in relationship with the characters and the location (It appears to be a cabaret). The type of lighting is completely un realistic and highly saturated.

Arn: Tempelridderen

March 12, 2010

This movie is titled “Arn: Tempelridderen” and the type of lighting in this particular set is naturalistic. One of the most important characteristic of the naturalistic lighting style is that emulates a real source of lighting that it is in the set such as a candle, the sun, or a lamp. Also, naturalistic lighting “hides” to the spectator a lighting preparation, this means that it is supposed to be lit by the light the source light on that scene.

In this particular case there is a main source light which is the atmosphere light which is entering to the scene by windows and from the roof. Also there are some candles that create high contrast in terms of color, not in illumination. It is interesting how all this beams of light surround the characters of the scene.
