“No Name”

January 16, 2010

The scene is lit by a set of fluorescent lamps, and as can be appreciated the source it is positioned in the  back of the character. This creates a perfect and well defined outline of the person even though the source light is not harsh, this effect is created because the enviroment is not lit at all.

At first sight it is difficult to establish is the person is looking towards the camera or looking to the wall, the visibility of the character is practically null in terms of details such as facial expression, such as.

The distribution of the light in the surfaces such as the wall and the floor is spread diverse type because the resulting lights do not exhibit a single direction.
Finally, the scene has a green hue, this could be because a filter placed in the camera but not in the source light.

“Abandoned House”

January 16, 2010

The lighting in this illustration has transmit to the viewer fear and horror. I believe that the “fear” emotion could be sensed by the viewer for many aspects besides the lighting, such as the blood in the furniture, paintings and also in the floor, but the lighting is the key element in this scene. Is the element that gives the “final touch”.

The quality of the lighting is particular because is not harsh but the source (exterior) is bright but if the shadows  is studied it is  not well defined. Also, the enviroment is very well lit, like if there is another source of light
(a wash light) in the scene, because if this composition was only lit by the beams of light entering from the window it should be much more darker and also a lot more of contrasted areas.

“Abbysic Doctrine”

January 16, 2010

The illustration uses light in different aspects. The first comment that I believe it is important is that the painting do not use color just use the black and white pallet, this is important because when the artist set the light he defined the mood of the painting.

The figure in the middle of the scene has a glowing in the back that I believe has the role of give protagonist to this particular character among the other characters or element in the composition.
The type of lighting that the artist uses is very soft, it is a wash light or a Fresnel as a keylight. But also uses well defined and bright lights on the torches.
I believe that the two more important aspects in the scene in terms of lighting are color and lighting and how the artist set the mood in the scene by the use of this tools .

“One ticket please”

January 16, 2010

The lighting in this illustration is interesting for many aspects. The first one is the high contrast in terms of intensity, the second is the color of the lights and the last one is the mixture of the strict motivational lighting and non motivotional lighting.

The high contrast between the bright and harsh red color and the washed blue light in this illustration has the role of prioritize the right part of the composition among another areas. The eye of the viewer is “flowing” from right to left because of this high contrast.

Another aspect is the antagonism between colors. In one hand the artist uses a red bright color which gives that it  associated to a scary figure which transmit the sense of “Horror” (besides the sign above the door), is like another dimension, in my opinion. And on the other hand, there is a blue and cold color that gives to the viewer nothing but “boring reality”.

Also, it is my opinion that the artist combine strict motivational lighting and non motivational lighting, because this types of lighting could be found in real life sources, but also they are used for setting a mood as well.

“The others”

January 16, 2010

This is a scene from the movie “The others” and the lighting is strict motivational light because tries to emulate real lighting, in sense of real source as a candle or a lamp.
The are different lighting sources and different intensity and colors.

In the foreground there are at least three types of lighting. The first one is the candle in the lamp that the actress is holding. The light is bright but it has not intensity and of course almos do not produce lighting, the real lighting comes from another source. There is a top light that illuminates the three characters and finally, there is another source light that illuminates the walland the painting in the foreground. On the other hand the background is lit by a source light and this light gives depth in the scene. This is important because
separates the actors from the background also. The candle light have a red hue, meanwhile the other sources have a blue hue, trying to emulate a night enviroment.

The lighting has almost no contrast, meaning that there is almost no difference between the lit and dark areas. It is a very
well achieve lighting.
