Total recall

March 19, 2010

In this shot is noticeable that there are two types of lighting, both similar, but different.

In one hand the set is lit by a pure red and there’s a medium high contrast between lights and shadows. On the other hand, the characters are lit by different light sources. As can be appreciated the characters are lit by a red and also by a white light. The difference is also in the shadows that the characters drop on the surface. This shadow are totally different as the one that are on the cliff, the characters almost don’t produce shadows, something totally different as the rocks on the ground.

One last final thought is that the scale is not quite interesting and is evident that this was shot on chrome key, but it will be wise to analyze this visual effect compared with the movies on that same era.

This light is naturalistic. The lighting is set to generate suspense, this lighting and the performance of the actress appears to be taken from a thriller movie. The camera appears to be a POV of another character or from a specific object of the set, because is framed between other objects.

The lighting in this shot comes mainly from the front of the character, from the place that the character is interacting. The quality of this light is intense and generates interesting shadows on the character face. Also there is another source in the back of the room that gives volume to the character as can be appreciated on the back of the head. Also there is a light glowing on the bottles in front of the character that prove that there is another source light.

There is a very noticeable foreground, midground and background on this shot because there are three characters and every one of them occupy one of this role.

The lighting is in all of them equal, this means that the lighting was set for the three characters in general and the light was not the main tool to enhance the important plane/character. The light quality is hard, and is directed towards the characters lighting only one side of the face (the opposite of the camera) leaving the other side lit only by rebound light. The color of the light is white and also there is a low intensity background light that strikes the back of the characters.

The main character is enhanced due to camera focus, and the plane that it is in focus is the foreground.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

The lighting style in this shot is set totally as expressionist. The shot it is not interesting in terms of composition but it is symbolic in terms of lighting style because enhance the situation that the characters are performing. This is a love scene and red intense and pure color represents that concept and as was said before, enhances it.

The quality of lighting is medium high in intensity, there is no high contrast between shadows and light and the characters must be lit also by a screen that rebound light, because the light is very even on them.

The lighting in this shot is no something extraordinary but it is well achieved. The lighting style selected to go along with the cinematography is naturalistic. The characters that are in the foreground are evenly lit and the lighting is different as the one that is distributed on the background.  In the foreground the light is light yellow and in the background is completely white.

Also in this scene is interesting how the characters are inside the lines created by the lamps on the roof.  It is interesting to note that the lighting designer used the lamps on the set to help illuminate the scene.
