The Promise

March 19, 2010

The lighting style is surrealistic. The lighting in this scene is completely unrealistic and this is close to a dream or something totally unrealistic.

In one hand the tree has been digitally created and also the characters had been acting in a blue or green screen and the shoot has been composite after. The composition is not good because the head of the girl is of focus, her feet appear to be floating. On the other hand the lighting in the lady is totally artificial, not matching with the lighting on the scene.

The reflexes on the water are not realistic as can be appreciated there is one trunk that is completely on focus, meanwhile the adjacent are off focus. If this shot tried to be naturalistic, is set as surrealistic and even is surrealistic is not well achieved.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

March 19, 2010

The lighting is set as expressionist and also symbolic. I believe that in most cases there is a pure lighting style in the compositions and many lighting styles are in the composition interacting each other and helping the director or lighting designer to “give the message” to the audience. The shot is in a church, the light in this location is mainly dark and the lighting is composed primarily by many different sources each one with different intensity.

In one hand the scene is primarily lit by two lights directed to the actress walking down the corridor. The quality of this two lights are medium high intensity and the colors is a blue/purple. Also the beams of these lights can be seen by appreciated in the scene due to the use of a gobo or a little fog in the atmosphere.

The background is composed with many candles which objective is not to illuminate the scene but to set the environment close to a ”saint” meaning. This also creates a tense environment and a nice suspense.

As Tears Go By

March 19, 2010

The shot is composed by mainly two planes. In one hand, in there is a close plane, that is the foreground and, on the other hand, there is a second plane that is the background.

The first to analyze is that the most important element is in the background this is because this is the plane that it is on focus.

In terms of lighting, the plane that it is in the foreground (something similar to a bed or a couch) it is being lit by a hard light, the intensity is medium high and it is completely or almost completely on focus, as can be appreciated due to the sharp edges of the beam. The second element to be  analyzed is the colors; in this plane, the colors are “full of life”, like for example the green, purple and white among others.

On the other hand, the background or second plane the lighting is similar but the difference remains in the surface where the light is being distributed. The floor is brown and the telephone is a black color, which generates another type of mood to the spectator.

Afro Samurai

March 19, 2010

The lighting in this composition is naturalistic. This is an illustration and the first to note is that there is high contrast between shadows and light. I believe that even the side are not being directly lit by the source that specific area should be more lit than really is because the rebound of light on the ground. I believe that this reality was presented this way because this dark area generates nice silhouettes in contrast with the background.

I’m a Cyborg

March 19, 2010

This shot from the movie of the movie “I’m a Cyborg” is interesting because the visual elements that are in the frame. First the lines, second the colors and finally, the symmetry.

The lines that are in the composition take the viewer eye towards an endless vanishing point, in the opposite side were the camera is placed. The feeling that this produce to the viewer is a very large human labor factory.

Second, the colors are pure ion terms that the characters are dressed in a saturated red, the floor is painted in a high saturated green and so on. This color patron is “broken” with the lighting, because as it can be appreciated the lighting on the walls generates a gradient, there is no high contrast in this lighting quality.

Third, the symmetry in the composition is obvious. This generates a “cold” and serious environment. The symmetry is present in the lines, colors, props and also in the character.
