gobo/filter

January 13, 2010

This lighting is interesting how the natural sunlight is being modified by the glass and therefore this affect the enviroment.
I believe this picture is interesting in contrast with artificial lighting or stage lighting.
In one hand the glass is acting as a “gobo” and also, the glass acts as a color filter.
It is hardly impossible for me to distinguish if the enviroment walls are yellow or this color is due of the “filter”.
Another interesting element is the caustics that had being generated by the glass creating a sharp and high quality light and also a
ambient and even environment lighting.

Caravaggio – “Alof de Wignacourt”

January 13, 2010

This is a painting called “Alof de Wignacourt” and the Author is Caravaggio.
One of the most interesting aspects of how the light  was managed in this painting is that caravaggio focus in three elements such as: first, the face of Alof de Wignacourt, Second but not less important, the Maltese crux in the chest and finally, the sword.

The most noticeable element of the painting is the crux, not only by it size, but also because the intensity of it, it is almost
glowing. The second is the person which is also well illuminated but only in one hemisphere and also is smaller than the
crux, which generates less importance in the painting and the third one is the sword, which is almost in the dark. I believe that Caravaggio gives importance to the elements by the light and the last interesting aspect is that
the background helps to accentuate these three elements because is in almost dark.

“The big combo”

January 13, 2010

This is a still frame of a movie titled “The big combo”.
In terms of lighting,  can be easily distinguish elements such as the characters silhouettes and also two source lights placed one in the left middle part of the composition and another one placed almost in front f the characters.

Both types of lights are harsh and defined but they  being by a physical barrier which is the fog that it is part of the composition.  This fog creates a “wall of light” in the composition and this, produces suspense to the spectator or viewer.
Another interesting aspect is that the stage lighting prepared for illuminating the enviroment and the characters are secondary which creates this interesting contrast between the bright enviroment and the dark characters/silhouettes.

The exorcist

January 13, 2010

This is a frame of the movie called “The exorscist”.  Is very interesting how the lighting has been staged in thisparticular scene.  Three aspects that I will analyze are, the source light from the second floor on the left directed to the character, the silouette of the character and how the lighting set the mood of this scene.
The first element is the source light directed from the second floor on the left, to the character in the first floor. The intensity and harshness of the light gives to the espectator a path to follow, from the source light to the character. This type of light is almost a followspot light but, in this case, for the spectator eye, not because the character is moving across the scene.

The second light effect created by a source light is the silouette of the character that it is standing. It is evident that the source light is coming from the window, in straight line to the camera, this angle creates a perfect silouette of the charachter.
The last element is the mood of the scene. It is very dramatic scene and very well done. With this type of stage lighting the audience can sense that something scary, intense or dramatic is happening and that whatever the character has to do, or deal with, is in that room on the second floor.

Rembrandt: “Philosopher in Meditation” by Matias Volonte.

January 12, 2010

The artist of this painting is Rembrandt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt)
and the title of this work of art is “Philosopher in meditation”.

There are many aspects that are interesting in terms of lighting, one is the
scale and another aspect is the distribution of light in the scene.

The scale is not only defined by the size of the area that it is lit but also because the contrast of another objects that are lit as well. As we can appreciate in this work of art it is clear (not only for the title) that the important figure in the scene is the philosopher and not the person in the right. In my opinion, Rembrandt used the  lighting as a  tool to show the “greatness” of the philosopher and, on the other hand, the “small” maid. Also Rembrandt uses differenttypes of intensity to show the characters roles in the scene.

The second aspect that I think is important to analyze, is the distribution of the lighting in the scene. As we can see in the scene there are many contrasts, from left to right and from top to bottom as well. I believe that by illuminating exact areas of the painting, Rembrandt tried to focus our sight to this specific parts of the painting and on the other hand, “hide” meaningless parts of the composition.
